Upon examination our urologist may determine that a patient is in need of a prostate biopsy to rule out prostate cancer. This procedure is performed in our office. With the patient lying on his side a biopsy needle, similar to one used to draw blood or administer injections, is inserted into the prostate. A probe, guided by trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS), is inserted into the rectum to help the physician properly place the needle, which is projected through the tip of the probe. A tissue sample is extracted from one or several areas of the prostate into the biopsy needle. This tissue is forwarded to a lab for slide preparation and returned to our facility for interpretation by our pathologist.

Our board certified pathologist reads our patient’s biopsy specimen at our facility. We find that we have a faster turn-around time on test results compared to those medical practices using outside lab services. This service also provides us with the opportunity to more effectively coordinate our patient’s health care due to increased pathologist and urologist office interaction and immediate attention to questionable or positive results.
